The DMC-40×0 and DMC-41×3 Now Have Twice The Program Memory! August 8, 2014

Galil is pleased to announce our latest firmware release, revision 1.2, for the DMC-40×0 and DMC-41×3. This release provides an increase in program memory from 2000 x 80 characters to 4000 x 80 characters, and an increase in the total array elements from 16,000 to 24,000.

Tips for using Galil Optoisolated Outputs Video

Galil has recently added a new video to its growing library of 2-minute instructional videos.  This latest video gives recommendations for wiring and supply voltages when connecting to the optically isolated outputs on Galil controllers.  This video focuses on best practices for connecting the outputs between the controller and load, and for connecting an external power supply to assure true optical isolation is maintained.  Proper connections when using the various output options such as sourcing or sinking, supply voltages, and current ratings are discussed. Custom motion controllers and PLCs consist of hardware and/or firmware modifications.  An example of a hardware solution might include a unique form factor, special connectors, user-specified communication interfaces, integrated amplifiers, or additional I/O.  Our hardware specials have a typical lead time of 12 weeks for prototypes with an NRE cost as low as $1000.00 US.

Controller firmware modifications may include coordinate transformation, ceramic motor control, custom filters or even custom I/O commands.  The cost for custom firmware starts as low as $400 US.

The typical lead time is 2 weeks for minor modifications and up to 8 weeks for a more complicated solution.

The process of creating a custom motion controller or PLC requires iterative collaboration between Galil and the customer. The procedure for requesting and receiving a custom controller is:

• A customer brings a special request to our engineering team.

• An engineer on the team works closely with the customer to define the solution.

• Once it’s defined, the Galil team writes a detailed specification and generates a quote. The quote includes charges for engineering, the estimated lead time and the unit price at the specified quantity (we give quantity discounts).

• The customer reviews the specification and quote, signs it and sends it back to Galil.

• The customer issues a purchase order.

• Galil’s R&D team develops the custom solution, tests the solution, and documents the changes.

• The solution is delivered to the customer within the specified time frame.

• After delivery to the customer, Galil’s engineering team continues to provide technical support free-of-charge during implementation at the customer site.

Galil Motion Controllers Support 2-Phase Closed-Loop Brushless (Step) Motors December 2, 2013

Two types of electrical motors have traditionally been used in automation applications; step motors with open loop operation and servo motors with incremental or absolute feedback.

Step motors are low cost, easy to use and are prime candidates for applications that require slow movement, high torque and low positional accuracy.  Feedback for step motors isn’t necessary because the current is kept constant through the phases which allow a position to be held with a fairly high level of static torque.

Step motors are not candidates for applications that require positional accuracy, smooth motion, fast speeds or power efficiency.

Applications that require accuracy and smoothness typically need servo motors with analog or digital feedback, where the motion controller provides a PID filter or something similar.  3-phase brushless motors are higher cost, and require more effort to stabilize than step motors, but they handle fast or slow speeds with perfect accuracy and smooth motion, at all times.

There are some occasions when applications desire the benefits of step motors but also need the accuracy of a servo motor.  Additional accuracy can be achieved on step motors with half, quarter, and microstepping motion.  While these modes provide some advantages, they do not reach the level of positional accuracy achievable with a servo motor.

A solution for these distinct applications can be a closed-loop step motor.  Adding a feedback device to the step motor, and controlling it like a servo motor, achieves the positional accuracy of a servo motor.  In this configuration the step motor acts like a 2-phase brushless servo motor.  Because it’s acting as a servo motor, current is only drawn when it is needed greatly improving the power efficiency and eliminating wasted heat.  However, like an open loop step motor, this solution provides high torque at low speeds. The closed loop step motor will not achieve as high speed or run as smoothly as a 3-phase brushless DC servo motor.

This solution is available on the DMC-30017 and the DMC-40×0.  Please contact a Galil Application Engineer to review which option will work best for your system.

Models AB200A100 and AVB200A100 output 125A continuous and 200A peak for up to 10 seconds at voltages from 20-80VDC, a nearly 50% increase in operating voltage from previous models.  Models AB100C200 and AVB100C200 output 100A continuous at voltages from 40-175VDC, a 25% increase in output current from previous models.  The new additions maintain the same dimensions as their predecessors and bring to a total of 8 different models to choose from allowing engineers to use the additional output with no additional size constraints.

New 2-axis Drives for DMC-40×0 and DMC-41×3 controllers from Galil October 5, 2013

Galil’s DMC-40×0 Accelera and DMC-41×3 Econo Ethernet motion controllers are now available with additional multi-axis servo and stepper drive options.  The AMP-43540 4-axis 600W brushless sine drive is now available in a 2-axis model as the AMP-43520, and the SDM-44040 4-axis stepper drive is available as a 2-axis model as the SDM-44020.  The new 2-axis drive options provide additional cost savings for OEM applications. A brief description of the new 2-axis amplifiers are below.  The 2-axis models will be available for shipment in about a month and announced in the April issue of ServoTrends.

AMP-435×0 2- and 4-axis 600 W Servo Drives with Sinusoidal Commutation (-D3520, -D3540)

The AMP-43540 contains four transconductance, PWM amplifiers for driving brushed or brushless servo motors with sinusoidal commutation and the AMP-43520 contains two PWM amplifiers.  Each amplifier drives motors operating at up to 8 Amps rms cont., 15 Amps peak, 20–80 VDC.  The gain settings of the amplifier are user-programmable at 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 Amp/Volt.  The switching frequency is 33 KHz.  The amplifier offers protection for over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, short-circuit and over-temperature.  Hall sensors are not required for brushless motor commutation.  A shunt regulator option is available.  The AMP-43520 (-D3520) 2-axis 600W brushed/brushless sine drive is $650 US in quantity 1 and $375 US/ea qty 100.

SDM-440×0 2- and 4-axis Stepper Drives (-D4020, -D4040)

The SDM-44040 contains four drives for operating two-phase bipolar step motors and the SDM-44020 contains two stepper drives.  The SDM-440×0 requires a single 12–30 VDC input.  The unit is user-configurable for 1.4 A, 1.0 A, 0.75 A, or 0.5 A per phase and for full step, half-step, 1/4 step or 1/16 step.  The SDM-44020 (-D4020) 2-axis stepper drive is $125 US in quantity 1 and $105 US/ea qty 100.

New DMC-30016 Pocket Motion Controller from Galil Motion Control September 29, 2013

Greenville, DE- Galil Motion Control, an industry leader in motion control technology, is announcing their latest drive option for the DMC-30000 Pocket Motion Controller Series.  The new DMC-30016 combines a single-axis motion controller with a 1.4A/phase stepper drive in a compact unit.

“The DMC-30016 joins the growing family of drive options for the DMC-30000 Pocket Motion Controller Series which includes the previously released DMC-30012 800W Brushless Sine Drive and DMC-30017 6A/phase Microstepping Drive”, said Lisa Wade, vice president of sales and marketing.  “Like other products in the DMC-30000 Series, the DMC-30016 offers higher performance, better power efficiency, smaller size, and a lower price than prior generation, single-axis controllers.

The new DMC-30016 controller contains a 1.4A per phase, 30V stepper amplifier which drives a two-phase bipolar stepper motor in full-step, half-step, ¼ step or 1/16 step.  The DMC-30016 is user configurable from 0.5A to 1.4A per phase in 10mA increments at 12-30 VDC.

Designed for compact size, the dimensions of the DMC-30016 controller/drive package are 3.9” x 5.0” x 1.5”, and no external heat sink is required.

Like other products in the DMC-30000 series, the DMC-30016 is higher speed than Galil’s prior generation single-axis controllers.  The 125 microsecond servo loop update time is twice as fast and the 15MHz encoder frequency and 3 MHz stepper pulse output are 25% faster.  Other features of DMC-30000 controllers include PID compensation with velocity and acceleration feedforward, non-volatile memory for user programs, multitasking for simultaneously running up to four programs, and I/O processing for synchronizing motion with external events.  Modes of motion include point-to-point positioning, position tracking, jogging, contouring, electronic gearing, ECAM, and PVT.

The DMC-30000 provides optically isolated inputs and outputs as a standard feature.  I/O include forward and reverse limit inputs, homing input, 8 uncommitted digital inputs, 4 uncommitted digital outputs, 2 uncommitted analog inputs and 1 uncommitted analog output.  Two daisy-chainable Ethernet ports are included and an external Ethernet hub is not required.  A 115 kb RS232 port is also provided.  The ability to receive inputs from two digital encoders is a standard feature.  BiSS, SSI and sinusoidal encoder input formats are available as options.

The DMC-30016 controller and stepper drive unit is $645 U.S. in single quantity and $415 US/ea in quantities of 100.  The DMC-30016 is available for immediate delivery.

In addition to the DMC-30012 controller & servo drive, DMC-30016 controller & stepper drive and DMC-30017 controller & microstepping drive packages, the DMC-30000 Series is also available as a controller-only model which can be connected to a stepper or servo motor amplifier of any power range.
