Zaber’s Gantries are designed for multi-axis applications where load and travel requirements exceed the rated cantilever load specs of Zaber’s simpler XY or XYZ systems.

In the T-G-LSM200A200A system (shown), a synchronized pair of lead-screws provide very low backlash and high stiffness.  Gantry systems include a base-plate with a full M6 on 25 mm grid of mounting holes, integrated high flex cable and cable management system.

The T-G-LSM gantry systems are composed of three linear stages with integrated controllers, a base-plate with a full M6 on 25 mm grid of mounting holes, integrated high flex cable and cable management system. In addition, these gantries are available in 100 or 200 mm travel per axis (custom lengths available), have a low profile – 70 mm overall height, and are customizable i.e. add another Zaber stage for a Z-axis.

In this video, the gantry system is moving a 9.4 kg (20.68 lb) load.

Introduction to Step Motors February 17, 2012

Nema Frame Step Motors

A step motor is a device whose normal shaft motion consists of discrete angular movements of essentially uniform magnitude when driven from sequentially switched DC power supply.

A step motor is a digital input-output device. It is particularly well suited to the type of application where control signals appear as digital pulses rather than analog voltages.  One digital pulse to a step motor drive or translator causes the motor to increment one precise angle of motion. As the digital pulses increase in frequency, the step movement changes into continuous rotation.

EtherNet/IP was introduced in 2001 and today is the most developed, proven and complete industrial Ethernet network solution available for manufacturing automation. EtherNet/IP is a member of a family of networks that implements the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) at its upper layers. CIP encompasses a comprehensive suite of messages and services for a variety of manufacturing automation applications, including control, safety, synchronization, motion, configuration and information. As a truly media independent protocol that is supported by hundreds of vendors around the world, CIP provides users with a unified communication architecture throughout the manufacturing enterprise.

EtherNet/IP offers several unique advantages for manufacturing automation applications:

  • Complete producer-consumer services let you simultaneously control, configure and collect data from intelligent devices over a single network or use a single network as a backbone for multiple distributed CIP networks
  • Compatible with standard Internet protocols – e.g. HTTP, FTP, SNMP and DHCP – and standard industrial protocols for data access and exchanges such as OPC
  • Compliance with IEEE Ethernet standards provides users with a choice of network interface speeds – e.g. 10, 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps – and a flexible network architecture compatible with commercially available Ethernet installation options including copper, fiber, fiber ring and wireless

Joystick operation is available with many of our drives, both stepper and servo.  Many joysticks are potentiometer based, which is the type to choose.  A 10 kilohm potentiometer will work well.  For steppers use the ST Configurator™ software to set up the drive for joystick operation.  For servos use the Quick Tuner™ software.

Here’s how to set a drive up with ST Configurator™:

Step 1)  From the home screen click on the Motion button.

Step 2)  Click on Velocity (Oscillator) Mode.

Step 3)  Uncheck the box “Use X1/STEP input as Run/Stop command ” and check the box “Speed proportional to analog input”. Then click Advanced Settings.

Step 4)  Set the Offset to 2500 mV.

Step 5)  Return to the home screen (by clicking OK) and download the settings to the drive. Then wire the joystick to the analog input of the drive. The center position of the joystick is stopped, while the ends of the joystick are full speed in either direction. There is no easier setup on Earth!
